How to Reinforce Your Roof in Preparation for Storms
Storms cause all kinds of damage, which, fortunately, you can protect your home from, or at least minimize its impact. In this blog, storm restoration specialists from KAT Construction, LLC share some tips on reinforcing your roof against storms.
Kinds of Storm Damage
If you’re going to reinforce your roof, you should know what you’ll be up against. High-winds are the biggest concern when a storm strikes your area, as it can cause the most damage. It can blow shingles off the roof deck and even lift the entire roof. It can also carry all kinds of debris that can damage your roof, siding and windows upon impact. Hail likewise causes impact damage, the severity of which depends on the size.
Wind-driven rain can cause further damage after the wind hits your roof. Gaps and cracks are primary entry points for rainwater, which can seep through the underlayment or roofing felts, through the roof deck and into the attic. In these situations, emergency storm damage roof repair must be conducted or the rainwater could cause further damage that may compromise the roof structure.
Protecting Your Roof
Before doing any kind of installation, check with the local zoning and code officials to make sure that the reinforcements won’t violate any building codes. Reinforcements will require removal of parts such as soffits, so ideally they should be installed during re-roofing, but they can be installed on existing roofs.
One of the most popular reinforcement systems is called a hurricane strap, which is a piece of metal that straps the rafters to the trusses. The idea is to brace these otherwise vulnerable parts when wind strikes. If you have a multiple-story home, additional straps must be installed on the load-bearing sections, and again at the sections that connect to the foundations. The idea is to maintain a sturdy structure as much as possible from the ground up. Minor impact damage will require far less repair work compared to a completely destroyed roof.
