BUR Roofs: 4 Things Roofers Do to Ensure Proper Installation
Built-up roofs, or BUR, have been around for a long time and have proven to be exceptional thanks to their long-term performance and durability. In this blog, full service restoration company Kat Construction shares the things roofers do to ensure proper BUR installation.
- Use the Right Kind of Asphalt — Built-up roofs are made of built-up layers of ply felts set in asphalt, covered by gravel or mineral surfacing. There are many kinds of asphalt products depending on the purpose. An inexperienced roofer may end up using a relatively “soft” kind of asphalt, which can melt and flow on a hot day instead of staying in place. Since “flat” roofs are not really flat, but rather slightly sloped towards the gutters, soft asphalt may collect at the gutters.
- Use the Right Amount of Material — A built-up roofing system requires 25 pounds of asphalt per square per ply sheet, or a layer about as thick as a dime per ply installed. If the roofer decides to cut corners and use too little, the roof will not be as waterproof as it should. Mop an asphalt layer that’s too thick and the layers will slip instead of bind. This is the reason why roofing and restoration professionals carefully calculate the square footage of flat roofs; it’s to make sure that the resulting roof is properly proportioned.
- Design the Roof for the Immediate Environment — BURs need to be built according to its immediate environment. Roofs that are exposed to extreme temperatures throughout the year will need to be designed to accommodate maximum expansion and contraction. Not doing so will result in buckled, cracked, or deformed roofing.
- Make Sure There Is No Ponding Water — Ponding water on built-up roofs can lead to many problems, from roofing damage caused by water intrusion, to creating an environment where moss and algae can thrive. Roofing professionals take proper drainage into account, making sure the layers that make up BUR follow the slope established by the roofing substrate.
