A 9-Step Post-Storm Roof Checklist
A roof is exposed to the elements 24/7. Anything from heat to strong rains can cause damage to it or add to its wear. But nothing is more destructive to roofs and other components of your home’s exterior than a strong storm.
The first thing to do when a storm or hail has passed is to make sure your family is safe, as well as your pets and most valuable possessions. After that, check your roof for any storm or hail damage. Here’s a step-by-step guide.
-
Check Your Property Surroundings. Check your yard for any roof parts that may have been blown off, such as shingles. This is also your opportunity to check the yard for anything that doesn’t belong there and may pose a danger to your family and your pets.
-
Check Your Roof From the Ground. It’s important to remain on the ground. Don’t go on a ladder and walk on your roof. A storm can cause plenty of damage and your roof might not be safe to walk on. A pair of binoculars may come in handy. Check for missing shingles or any exposed parts.
-
Check Beyond the Shingles. There are other components that might be broken, such as siding, fascia, soffits, or other roof structures. It’s important to check before calling for storm or hail damaged siding restoration and other jobs.
-
Check for Gutter Damage. Gutters go through a lot of punishment during a storm. They have to catch and divert loads of water, sometimes for hours. Check the gutters and downspouts for damage or clogging.
-
See If You Can Go to the Roof. It’s impossible to check your gutters without going on a ladder. While doing so, try to see if your roof is safe and sturdy. While you may not have to walk on it, at least get a closer look by staying on the ladder.
-
Inspect the Interior. You might not spot anything out of the ordinary on your roof but check inside your home for leaks and water stains. Your walls or ceiling might tell a different story.
-
Keep a Record. Bring a notebook around with you to write down anything that doesn’t seem right. Use your phone or a camera to take photos.
-
Check the Warranties. Your roof comes with the warranty, just like your siding, windows, etc. Check your policy for what your insurance covers. The list you made and the photos you take can help when you file a claim.
-
Call a Professional. A roofing professional will inspect your roof and find things you may have missed. Storm and hail damaged roof repair is often not a job for DIY enthusiasts. It’s always safer to bet on a professional’s opinion and work.
